12 Days... No Power

We were lucky.  When Super Storm Sandy hit our home was spared the devastation that so many around us faced.  In the days that followed though, something interesting happened.  With no school, mass transit, or power our family found itself adopting a new rhythm.  When the sun went down, we went to sleep.  When the sun came up, we woke up.  Meals were cooked over the fireplace, the children willingly pitched in with the dishes, and time was spent talking, playing board games, and reading.  Suddenly sitting in the glow of candle light, there was time.  It was as if the loss of power somehow caused the cosmic hands of time to stop.  When the lights came back on I cheered like all the rest, but a part of me was sad.  There was something special about that time in the dark.  Something easily lost in our ultra electronic world.   I only hope it doesn't take another hurricane to find it again.
